Selling a Gun: Pawn Shop vs. Private Sale vs. Consignment in Utah

Last updated: October 2026

Not legal advice. This guide is general information, not legal advice. Each shop sets its own prices, fees and policies.

Quick summary: A pawn shop or gun shop buyout is the fastest way to sell, but you'll usually get the lowest price because the shop needs room to resell. A private sale usually gets you the most money but takes more time and care. Consignment sits in between: a shop sells it for you and keeps a cut. The right choice depends on whether you care more about speed, price or convenience.

The three main ways to sell a gun in Utah

Pawn shop or dealer buyout Private sale Consignment
Speed Same day Days to weeks Weeks to months
Your price Lowest Usually highest Middle (minus the shop's cut)
Effort Low Highest Low
Who checks the buyer Shop runs checks when it resells You, or an FFL if you use one Shop
Who sets the price Shop's offer You You and the shop

These are general patterns, not guarantees.

Option 1: Selling to a pawn shop or gun shop

How it works

You bring the gun in. The shop looks it over and makes an offer. If you accept, you get paid, often the same day. Pawn shops may also offer a pawn loan, where you get cash and can buy the gun back later by repaying the loan plus fees.

Pawnshops that deal in guns must hold a federal firearms license, so the shop logs the gun into its records (27 CFR 478.125). Utah also regulates pawnshops and requires them to report transactions (Pawnshop, Secondhand Merchandise, and Catalytic Converter Transaction Information Act, Utah Code Title 13, Chapter 32a). Expect to show ID.

Pros

  • Fast cash.
  • No meeting strangers.
  • The shop handles the paperwork and any background check when it resells.

Cons

  • Lowest price. The shop needs margin for resale.
  • A pawn loan can cost a lot in fees if you don't repay it quickly. Read the terms.

Best for

Sellers who need money today or don't want to deal with buyers.

Option 2: Private sale

How it works

You list the gun, talk with buyers, meet, and sell. In Utah, a private sale between two Utah residents doesn't have to go through a dealer (Utah Code 53-5a-602(2) covers dealer sales only), but you can't sell to anyone who's prohibited, under 18 without a parent, or from another state without an FFL. See How to Sell a Gun Privately in Utah.

Pros

  • Usually the best price, since there's no middleman.
  • You choose the buyer.
  • Listing on GunTreasure is free.

Cons

  • Takes time to answer messages and meet.
  • You're responsible for checking who you sell to.
  • Scam and safety risks if you're careless. See How to Avoid Gun Classifieds Scams.

Best for

Sellers who want the most money and don't mind a little work.

Option 3: Consignment

How it works

A gun shop displays and sells your gun for you. When it sells, the shop keeps a fee, often a percentage of the sale price, and pays you the rest. You and the shop agree on the asking price and how long it will stay up.

Pros

  • The shop handles buyers, paperwork and background checks.
  • Often a better price than a buyout.
  • No meeting strangers.

Cons

  • Slower. It could sit for weeks.
  • The shop's fee cuts into what you get.
  • You may lose control of the price if the agreement allows markdowns.

Questions to ask a consignment shop

  • What's your fee, and is there a minimum?
  • How long will you display it? What happens if it doesn't sell?
  • Can you lower the price without asking me?
  • When and how do I get paid?
  • Is the gun insured while it's in your shop?

Best for

Sellers with a valuable or unusual gun who want a fair price without the hassle.

Other options

  • Trade-in toward another gun at a dealer. Convenient, but usually priced like a buyout.
  • Auctions for rare or collectible guns.
  • Selling to a family member in Utah, following the same rules as any private sale.

How to decide

  1. Need cash today? Pawn or dealer buyout.
  2. Want top dollar and have time? Private sale.
  3. Want a fair price with no meetups? Consignment.
  4. Not sure what it's worth? Read How to Price a Used Gun and get two or three shop offers to compare.
